Sharjah International Airport is today one of the busiest airports in the Middle
East. It was opened on January 1, 1977, as first category II airport in the
Arabian Gulf with an annual capacity of two million passengers. Since then it
has seen tremendous growth and in 2005 the Institute of Transport Management
has named the Sharjah International airport as the best Global Airport of the

floor area of 32,000 square meters is served by separate cargo aircraft parking
positions. It is equipped for loading 14 narrow bodied or 10 wide-bodied aircraft
or a combination of both. Two additional cargo aircraft parking areas are also
available to accommodate up to 16 narrow bodied aircraft of different types.
It is also the only airport globally where two aircraft can swap their complete
loads simultaneously.
