Situated in Northwest Africa, the Atlas Mountains extend for 2,400 kilometers. Jbel Toubkal, in Southwestern Morocco, is the highest peak of the mountain range. It rises up to 4,167 meters. The population of Atlas Mountains, Morocco mostly consists of Berber. They are an indigenous ethnic group of Northwest Africa. The Atlas Mountains in Morocco can be divided into Rif (it is not exactly in the mountain range but is included for completeness), Middle Atlas, High Atlas, and Anti-Atlas. The entire Middle Atlas, the westernmost of the three Atlas Mountains, is situated in Morocco. South of Middle Atlas is the High Atlas stretching for 700 kilometers. This range is filled with high peaks of which nearly ten are above 4,000 meters. It starts at the Atlantic coast in the west and runs till the Moroccan- Algerian border. The Anti-Atlas range starts near the Atlantic in Southwest Morocco where the range drops abruptly. The Anti-Atlas Range borders Sahara in the south. Some of the most beautiful places in the Atlas Mountains, Morocco are the Draa valley and the Ourika Valley. Another attraction of the Morocco Atlas Mountains is the Lake Lala Takerkoust which was created due to a hydroelectric dam near Barrage Cavagnac. The popular towns and villages of the range in Morocco include Tahanaoute, Amizmiz, Morocco, Asni, Tin Mal, Ljoukak and Oukaimden. Today the mountain range is home to numerous Morocco tourist attractions.
