Kuantan is the sixth largest city in Malaysia with an approximate population of 350,000 people. Many areas in Kuantan are not heavily populated and the overall density is about 87 people per square kilometer. Kuantan is now the state capital of Pahang Darul Makmur and remains an important and popular tourist destination in Malaysia. Kuantan has been in existence since the 1850s and is located on the central-eastern seaboard. It lies at about 277km to the east of the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. The main products that are produced here include palm oil, rubber, cocoa, and petrochemicals. Heavy industry and the manufacture of machinery are also important to the economy. The city of Kuantan is a great place to visit because of its well-planned location with a number of interesting attractions and beautiful sandy beaches. Some of the popular attractions in Kuantan include Teluk Chempedak Beach, Taman Gelora Park, Taman Teruntum – a mini zoo where you could watch some animals, Berserah - a famous village for fish, Balok – a famous beach for windsurfing and Batu Hitam, an underdeveloped beach where all the stone are black or dark in colour. Although the city is not large, it has a personality quite unlike that of other cities in the country.
The many eateries offering delicious local fare, the handicraft shops and traditional sports in Kuantan are some of the favourite attractions for visitors here. This is also a good place to check out how batik printing is done and also to buy some local souvenirs to bring home that could range from trinkets to cloth to the state’s famous fish crackers.
Kuantan’s State Mosque is a major attraction with its impressive dome and minarets. The beautiful structure is a treat for those who are into architecture and design. Very few people would hesitate to tell you that it is the most eye-catching building in the entire city.
Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Airport is the small airport in Kuantan and has a few flights to Kuala Lumpur. There is a single weekly flight to Kuala Terengganu. You could also reach Kuantan by bus from Kuala Lumpur and it takes about 4 hours to cover the entire journey. Karak Highway and East Coast Expressway connects Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur which was opened in 2004. You could cover the distance by car in 2.5- 3 hours using this highway.
