Japanese Poetry
Japanese Poetry is an important form of poetry respected and read all over the world. Japanese poetry has a rich culture and heritage and the oldest written work in Japanese literature is Kojiki in the 8th century. Early Japanese Poetry is not long and had no fixed forms.

The best-known forms of Japanese poetry all over the world are haiku and senryu. The traditional classic form is waka. Most of Japanese Poetry was written in the Chinese language in the olden days. It would be more precise to refer to Japanese poetry as Japanese language poetry. In the Tale of Genji, both kinds of poetry are mentioned frequently. Japanese poets were completely fascinated when they first encountered Chinese poetry which was at its peak during the Tang Dynasty. It took the Japanese poets several hundred years to digest the foreign impact and make the Chinese poetry a part of their culture and also merge it with their literary tradition in their mother tongue. Waka and Kanshi include Japanese works written in Chinese and were the two greatest pillars of Japanese Poetry. Many other forms of Japanese poetry arose from them such as renga, haiku or senryu.

A new trend in Japanese Poetry was witnessed during the middle of the 19th Century. Since this time, the major forms of Japanese poetry have been tanka, a new name for waka, haiku and shi.

Main forms of Japanese poetry nowadays can be divided into experimental poetry and poetry that seeks to revive tradition. Poets writing in tanka, haiku and shi move in separate planes and seldom write poetry other than in their specific chosen form, although some active poets are eager to collaborate with poets in other genres.

Some of the important collection of Japanese Poetry include the Man'y?sh?, Kokin-wakashu and Shin-kokin-wakashu. A few important Japanese poets are Yosano Akiko, Masaoka Shiki, Santoka, Takamura Kotaro, Ishikawa Takuboku, Hagiwara Sakutaro, Kenji Miyazawa, Noguchi Yonejiro, Tanikawa Shuntaro and Tomobe Masato.

Japanese Poetry is quite popular not only Japan, but all over the world. Some of the leading poets in Japan are being increasingly noticed by readers all over the world. A number of Japanese poets have received a number of international awards and recognition for their works.
