Rockefeller Museum Israel is located in the old city walls of Jerusalem . This museum is one of the oldest Museums in Israel. It is an archaeological museum which was earlier known by the name of Palestine Archaeological Museum. The Rockefeller Museum Israel started functioning from 13th January 1938, eight years after the foundation stone was laid on 19th June 1930 . The museum has a immense collection of archaeological remains which was unearthed from the region. The Rockefeller Museum Israel has used white limestone in making the building structure which is a blend of eastern and western architecture.

Before the initiation The Rockefeller Museum Israel , there was no museum in Jerusalem to demonstrate the treasure of the region . The founder and the director of the University of Chicago Oriental Institute visited this place in 1925 and was surprised to see the vast archeology getting wasted .So James Henry Breasted, the concept orienter approached John D. Rockefeller, Jr for funds. Rockefeller Jr agreed to donate money to open a museum in this region. He donated a huge sum of two millions which was quite a big amount at that time.

With the sanction of the amount a suitable site was selected for building the museum. The designing for the museum was done by the chief architect of the Mandatory Department of Public Works, Austen St Barbe Harrison.

The museum is managed by two institutions: The Israel Museum and the Israel Department of Antiquities and Museum. The first curator of the museum was John H Liffe who had the responsibility to arrange the facts in chronology.

The museum has a collection of the materials excavated in this region from the stone-sage to the 18th century. Among the valuable and treasured items in the Museum, the visitor can see the wooden panels of the 8th century Al Aqsa Mosque and the marbles headers of Church of the holy Sepulchre .
