Israel is a technologically advanced country situated in the Middle East bordering the Mediterranean Sea and in between Egypt and Lebanon. The demographics of Israel contains mainly of Jewish, Non-Jewish, Europe/ America born and a small minority of Asian born and African born. As per the statistics till October, 2006 Israel has a population of 7,082,000 which includes over 2,00,000 people in East Jerusalem, 2,50,000 settlers in West Bank and around 20,000 in Israeli occupied Golan Heights. The Age Structure according to the 2004 statistics is given below: 1 0 – 14 years : 28.4% 2 15 – 64 years : 61.7% 3 65 years and over : 9.9% The median age for male is 29.6 years and for female it is 30.5 years The population growth rate is 1.18 %( 2006 EST.) During the 1990s, as a result of massive immigration to Israel the Jewish population growth rate was about 3% per year. The major section of it came from the republics of the former Soviet Union. High population growth rate is also witnessed among certain Jewish groups, especially adherents of Haredi Judaism. The growth rate of the Israeli Arab population is 2.5%, while the growth rate of the Israeli Jewish population is 1.4%. The growth rate of Israeli Arab population has slowed down (from 3.3% in 1999 to 2.5% in 2006). Birth rate is 17.97/1,000 population (2006 EST.) Death rate is 6.18/1,000 population (2006 EST.) The net migration rate is a minimal3 migrants/1,000 population (2006 EST.) Israel has an infant mortality rate of 6.89 deaths/1,000 live births and the total fertility rate is 2.41 children born/ women (2006 EST.) The Israeli population can be broken down into the following ethnic groups: Jewish 76.4%, Muslim 16%, Arab Christians 1.7%, other Christian 0.4%, Druze 1.6%, unspecified 3.9% (2004) The Jews are grouped into Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Bene Roma, Mizrahim and the Beta Israel of Ethiopia. Among Jews, 68% were Sabras (Israeli-born), mostly second or third generation Israelis. The rest are Olim — 22% from Europe and the Americas, and 10% from Asia and Africa, including the Arab countries. These in general is the cross section of the population of Israel. The Israel population is an amalgamation of people of various origin and religion which makes it an interesting country.
