Yogyakarta is probably one of the most attractive places in Java, Indonesia and its history dates back to centuries. Among all the important tourist's attractions in Yogyakarta, one place that deserves mention is the fascinating Borobudur a landmark in architecture. Borobudur is hailed as one of the finest examples of Buddhist monuments in South East Asia and it stands out among many such accomplished works of architecture and sculpture. The details of the monument are as follows: Year of Establishment of the Monument: The Borobodur Monument was established in the 8th century. Location of the Monument: The Borobudur Monument is known to stand on a hill top with volcanoes and green fields surrounding the edifice on all sides. The temple lies to the Northwestern side of Yogyakarta Description of the Monument: The monument is a huge multi layered structure and is adorned by the Great Stupa which resembles a bell right on the top with small mushroom stupas also surrounding the edifice. The Monument is at a towering height of 128feet or 40 meters above the ground level. The monument is a part of the series of small temples comprising of three huge statues of Buddhhas with two disciples. Borobudur is famous for its terrace which is covered with scriptures of Buddhist legends and teachings in scripted on them. These scriptures have been regarded as amazing examples of Buddhist architecture and legends. They are carved out of blocks of volcanic rocks. Very recently The Monument has been acknowledged as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Particularities: The tourists can reach the Monument by a local bus from Yogyakarta's Umbulharjo bus station. Timings: The monument should be ideally visited from 6am to 5pm. Some visitors can enter the temple premises at 4.30am though only after attaining special permission. Admission fee is a modest US$11.
