Jakarta being the capital of Indonesia has an intriguing history and loads
of charming aspects to add color to the vibrant tradition and culture of the

profitable than inter-trade between Asia and Europe. Menara Syahbandar
was constructed in 1839 as part of fortress which later on found its utility
as a defense tower and eventually it was used as a meteorological station. Menara

In 1839, Menara Syahbandar was constructed to replace the old flag pole in
ship dock situated right on the area across a river. Menara Syahbandar was
primarily used as a meteorology post as from the pole and eventually the tower,
officials used to keep on observing the anchoring ships and send them signals.
Museum Bahari is located to the west of Menara Syahbandar and this museum
reflects a very old and strong edifice with Dutch architecture. The museum also
has a wonderful collection of a variety of maps of the city which depicts the
different stages of the development of the city.
The museum forms of something which in Dutch is referred to as Westzijdsche
Pakhuizen (Warehouse on the (West bank). Nutmegs, pepper, coffee, tea, and cloth
in a large scale were stored here.

of Sunda Kelapa Harbor then a view from the top of the Menara Syahbandar
tower is a must. Standing there one does not only gets transcended to the old
world charm of the Sunda Kelapa Harbor and craves for the hustle and bustle
of the port activities but gazing over the Kali Besar Bridge and Ciliwung River
also offers a refreshing visual treat.
