The Federal Republic of Germany is a large state in Europe. Germany is divided for adminstrative convenience into 16 states.Together these states are called Bundeslander and in singular, each state is called Bundesland.
  •  The 16 states of Germany lie in different geographical regions of Germany.
  •  South Germany comprises Bavaria and Baden-Wuttemberg.
  •  North Germany consists of the five states of Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Bremen and Meckleburg-Western Pomerania.
  •  West Germany consists of the four states of Saarland, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate.
  •  East Germany, east of the Oder-Neisse line, comprises the four states of Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin and Saxony.
  •  Middle Germany consists of the states of Thuringia and Hesse

Each of these geographical regions of Germany has its own special and distinctive features which makes it beautiful in its own way.

South Germany boasts the famous Black Forest, declared a national heritage. Bordering Switzerland and Austria is Germany’s biggest lake, Lake Konstanz perfect for hiking and cycling and other recreational activities.

North Germany is characterised by numerous lakes formed by glacial action long ago and flat, low-lying land. Magnificent chalk cliffs and sweeping, beautiful beaches are a characteristic feature of the Baltic coast.

West Germany is the tiniest region of Germany and the people here love their food. West German cuisine consists of a touch of the French cooking style.

East Germany features the most breathtaking natural landscapes and is like a fairyland full of magnificent castles and palaces.

Middle Germany features beautiful parks that rank among the top national parks of the country. The Hainich Forest and the Thuringian Forest are some of the most magnificent parks you’ll ever see. Besides, there are other places of lush beauty.

The 16 states are divided into smaller territories called districts. There are 439 districts altogether.
